Barclays Premier League
Manchester City vs Blackburn
City of Manchester Stadium
11 Sept
3pm Kick-off
Money-bags Man City take on Blackburn in what could arguably described as a must-win game for the blues. Despite splashing the cash in the transfer window, Roberto Mancini's men are already lagging 5 points behind leaders Chelsea in the title race. Always pretty consistent at home, Blackburn can expect a tough time from Mancini's expensively assembled squad and with over £145 million spent, they wont be the only ones this season to be troubled by the skill and ability of James Milner, David Silva and Mario Balotelli, as well as many of their other extravagant purchases. Blackburn on the other hand may not have spent as much cash as their opponents but boss Sam Allardyce has still picked up
some decent players over the Summer, including Mame Biram Diouf on loan
from Manchester United. The Senegalese striker has already made a big impression with the Rovers faithful after netting a hat-trick in a Carling Cup tie and bagging a goal against Arsenal in their last league game. After beating Liverpool 3-0 in their last home outing, Man City will be confident of a similar result here, expect the Rovers to return to Blackburn disappointed.

Rock Band 3 ***
Wii, Xbox 360, PS3
Featuring 83 new songs to perform, there is bound to be something for everyone in this latest installment of the popular Rock Band franchise. From Elton John to HIM and Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody (finally!) you'll be strumming, singing and whacking those plastic drums with all your mates. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the game is the development of a new guitar controller with strings and frets which can be plugged into an amplifier and used as a real instrument. This, along with the new two-octave keyboard peripheral, expansion cymbals for the drums and up to three singing parts in some of the songs, shows that the creators are trying to make the experience as lifelike as possible. Even so, this market is one that most are starting to tire of. With only a limited number of songs, it can get tiring playing the same one endlessly to unlock more with the over-sensitive system telling you you're out of time. And needless to say, that guitar controller is pretty expensive too.

Sims 3 ***

Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, Wii, PS3
Yep, the top selling PC game is making its way to the other gaming platforms. Love it or hate it, chances are you've played one of the versions of The Sims, in which you create simulated people and control their lives. These are basically the same as the game already released for the PC, which boasts integrated community lots, greater control over sim creation and different personality traits. The main addition to gameplay seems to be the new karma powers, which allow the player to instantly change their sims' lives – for better or worse. Often seen as inferior to the PC versions, the creators have endeavoured to make each game relevant to its platform. The DS version features a story mode while the Wii game recreates adventure game experiences. Despite the long history of the game, the creators have managed to progress this version enough from its predecessors to make it worth checking out. Though if you get bored of it quickly, there won't be the string of expansion packs that the PC version gets.

True Crime: Hong Kong ****

PS3, Xbox 360, PC
The third installment of the popular True Crime series, which has also featured Streets of LA and New York City, this game takes the story global in its Hong Kong setting. Playing as detective Wei Shan, players get to explore the whole city as they attempt to take down the Triads. Similar to the Grand Theft Auto series, the game sees players taking on missions and gradually building up their reputation by driving, free running and killing throughout the city. The developers have fully used the move to the seventh generation consoles to their advantage, with gameplay constantly cinematic in its visuals. A great addition to the sandbox genre, you're guaranteed to have hours of fun exploring the city and killing whoever you want.

Final Fantasy XIV ****

PC
If you're anything like me, you were disappointed when the Final Fantasy creators decided to make 11 a MMORPG - massively multiplayer online role playing game, like WoW – and if so, you'll be disappointed again. Yep, 14 is another online game for the PC, with the PS3 version release delayed until Spring next year. But if MMORPGs are your bag, this one seems to have a lot to offer. Boasting a larger world than ever to explore and a more flexible playing character, it seems the makers really have done their all to move the genre forwards. Solo missions and character development are encouraged through upgrade possibilities for skills and abilities, varying the gameplay away from guild quests. So if you enjoyed 11, the makers have advanced this version enough to keep the game fresh and enjoyable.
The Shoot ***

PS3
Coinciding with the release of the new PlayStation Move, The Shoot is the first shooter on the platform to use the motion sensor camera and Wii-like controller. Playing as a Hollywood action actor, you shoot evil aliens, undersea monsters and cowboys in a number of environments. Taking advantage of the new Move, players are tracked by the camera so that every duck and tilt is mirrored on screen to make it altogether a more interactive experience. The hand-held controller also has advanced motion sensors to accurately track your small hand movements. Although limited in its playing time and diversity, this is a good start to what is bound to be a slowly progressing Move series.
Last Window: The Secret of Cape West ****

Nintendo DS
Part of the popular puzzle-solving game movement for the DS, Last Window is set in 80s LA and follows the attempts of Kyle Hyde to unravel his father's past and strange death. More adult than the similar Professor Layton series, the concept is very similar as players work their way through various mysteries and puzzles to progress. This simple format, though, is made more compelling by the twisting storyline and dark characters. Extra interest is ensured by the fact that all the decisions you make have an impact on the outcome and events of the story. The whole game overflows with jazz, mystery and film noir ambience.
